WORLD'S FIRST LGBT BREWERY TO OPEN IN SAN DIEGO

PURPLE, RED, ORANGE, YELLOW GREEN & BREW!

The world’s most widely consumed alcoholic beverage and third most popular drink only after water and tea is preparing to “Come Out of the Closet” and into the hands of consumers in time to celebrate the 43rd anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, the recognized birth of the LGBT civil rights movement. The Hillcrest Brewing Company (HBC), is being celebrated as the first “Out and Proud LGBT brewery worldwide."

The “hoperatives” behind the company are the Mo’s Universe Family of Restaurants owned by Chris Shaw a well known San Diego restaurateur who was recently recognized by The City Of San Diego and Councilman Todd Gloria for his commitment to the LGBT Community and America’s Finest City. The company includes other famously known restaurants: Urban Mo's Bar & Grill, Baja Betty's and Gossip Grill, all popular LGBT restaurants and bars located in the colorful and vibrant gayborhood of Hillcrest in San Diego. All three restaurants are currently pouring HBC's first micro brew- a pale ale named Perle Necklace after the perle hops used in the recipe.

Eddie Reynoso, Marketing & Public Relations Director for Mo's Universe states, "The brewery follows closely in the footsteps of Queer Beer in Europe, Purple Hand & Salamandra Beers from Mexico and Gay Pride Beer from Vermont" all of which have previously marketed specifically to the LGBT market, however the Hillcrest Brewing Company distinguishes selves as the “Queens of Beer” he adds. "Beer has come out of the closet, and on high heels! The Hillcrest Brewing Company is the first and only openly gay brewing company in the world" says Reynoso.

The Hillcrest Brewing Company will be specializing in handcrafted beer and stone oven pizzas with bottles, growlers & kegs to-go. Chris Shaw says “Our businesses have always been a place to come as you are and be who you are… the Hillcrest Brewing Company will follow in the line of our other restaurants in providing our guests with the best product and an extraordinary experience every time they visit us.” Joe Kraft, HR Manager and partner in the restaurant adds “The pizza will be perfectly orchestrated with a focus from the water and flour to create its crust, to the fresh Italian Roma tomatoes with fresh toppings and cheeses before it is fired in stone ovens.”

Located at 1458 University Avenue, in the colorful and vibrant LGBT community of Hillcrest- HBC will feature four initial microbrews with plans for up to twelve more to come. Pouring only grains and grapes- its 24 beers on tap and its assorted selection of wines will be paired with specialty pizzas, baked in the brewery’s double lined stone ovens. The remainder of the taps has been reserved for “Guest” brewers from other local micro breweries. A soft will take place in mid June with the community invited to follow the company’s progress via www.mosuniverse.com and their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/HillcrestBrewingCompany or via Twitter @QueensOfBeer.

Hillcrest Brewing Company General Manger, Joey Arruda, formerly of Baja Betty’s and a partner in the project says the brewery will employ 15-20 individuals that will include the HBC’s “breweristas”, chefs and management. “Our staff is carefully being selected to ensure we carry on the passion and commitment that our other playgrounds are known and recognized for. This is also true for our beers- which we invited employees from all of our restaurants to submit names for us to consider. These include- “Brain Lubricant classified as American Strong, Crotch Rocket a Red, Perle Necklace a Pale Ale, and Eighth Day an IPA.” David White, Head Brew Master and also a partner adds “Many of our beers are a little outside of convention. I started brewing to create beers that I liked, rather than to win competitions. As a result, many of my beers blur the BJCP guidelines here and there. Brain Lubricant, for example is a strong ale, with a long hoppy finish that could only be entered in the specialty beers category. And Perle Necklace is a subtle pale ale using pearl hops in the recipe.”

The interior of the Hillcrest Brewing Company will feature an open ceiling with sealed concrete floors and a 15 foot chandelier made with 97 sustainable 22oz beer bottles that will hang within a 23 foot copula. Additional clusters of hanging beer bottle chandeliers will give life to a total Frankenstein set up, with much of the equipment home made including a steam punk style bottling machine built from scratch. A 13 foot garage door will open to an L-Shaped outdoor patio with cushioned keg barrel seating and planters with local varietal hop bines (hop vines) that can grow up to 25+ feet along horizontal trellises.
